Goals vs. Dreams: 6 Tips to Completing Your Action Plan

We have all heard the statement: A goal is a dream with an action plan. How many of your goals have a great action plan attached? Is that action plan working to help you achieve your goals?

Here are 6 tips to make your action plan great:

  1. Re-write your goals again and simplify them so that they are more realistic. Sometimes, when you identify your goals, they may be lofty or non-specific. Re-write them and be very specific. Here’s an example: I want to lose some weight. More specific: I will lose 20 lbs by December 31!
  2. Understand why you want to achieve your goal. Focus on life after the goal is achieved. In Steven Covey’s book, Seven Habits, one of his habits is to begin with the end in mind. Do you have a clear picture of life after you achieve the goal?
  3. Define your baby steps first. Let’s look at the goal above. If you need to lose weight, then exercise will need to be a part of your daily life. If you could take the steps instead of the elevator, that would be a baby step. If you need to eliminate ice cream, then that is a baby step. Now you have a list of small things you can do today to help you get closer to achieving your goals.
  4. Step forward and talk with a success partner. Find someone who deeply cares about you and can understand why your goals are important to you. Ask them to talk with you at a pre-determined time to review your success and failures. A set time will add some accountability to your process.
  5. Give your all to your goals. Keep a journal of your days so that you understand what influences your actions. Then, you can add great items to your day and eliminate the distractions and negative influences.
  6. List out 5 tasks each day for the next seven days that you want to accomplish. Review your lists and prioritize your tasks. Accomplish what you can, but challenge yourself to accomplish them all!

Good luck and make everything count! Become Deliberate!
